Winter internships: the window most students miss
The Indian winter internship cycle is decided between August and October, months before the December break it fills. By the time most students start looking in November, the positions worth having were allocated to people who applied while the semester was still finding its feet.

Why winter is easier to win than summer
Summer is the cycle everyone plans for, which is exactly why it is crowded. Winter draws a fraction of the applicants for a meaningful share of the positions, because most students write off a four-week break as too short to be worth the effort of applying.
It is not too short. A focused month on a production codebase produces more evidence of ability than a semester of coursework, and it is the kind of evidence that makes the following summer's applications land differently. The students who end up with strong summer offers are disproportionately the ones who already did a winter stint and had something concrete to point at.
What a four-week internship should actually produce
One shipped thing. Not five tickets touched and none finished — one feature, fix, or internal tool that exists in production and that you can describe end to end: what it does, why it was needed, what you deliberately chose not to build.
That single artefact outperforms a longer internship with nothing pointable at the end of it, because it is the only version of the story that survives a follow-up question. Anyone can say they interned somewhere. Far fewer can walk through a decision they made and defend it.
Pick the thing in your first week. A month disappears quickly, and the most common way a short internship produces nothing is waiting to be assigned something meaningful instead of proposing it.
Applying without a campus process
Winter cohorts are rarely routed through campus placement cells, which is why they feel invisible — there is no portal that lists them and no notice on a department noticeboard. They are filled through direct applications, referrals, and open-source programmes that run cohorts year-round.
That is inconvenient, and it is also the opportunity: a process with no queue rewards the person who shows up early with something to show. Questions students actually ask
When do winter internships open in India?
Applications for December–January cohorts generally open in August and peak in September. October is late but workable. November is largely too late for anything competitive, though cancellations do occur.
Is a four-week winter internship long enough to be worth it?
Yes, if you treat it as shipping one thing rather than sampling many. A single finished piece of production work is the point, and length is not what makes an internship count in a later conversation.
Can a 2nd-year student get a winter internship?
Yes. Winter cohorts are consistently less competitive than summer ones, which makes them the more realistic first internship for a 2nd-year with a few genuine projects to show.
Do winter internships pay?

Can I do a winter internship alongside end-semester exams?
Most December cohorts start after exams finish. If yours overlaps, say so during the interview rather than after accepting — teams that plan around it are fine, and the ones that will not are telling you something useful about how they work.
