India’s regulator is unusually explicit about this. The AICTE Internship Policy states that internships may be full-time or part-time; they are full-time in the summer vacation and part-time during the academic session, and sets one credit at a minimum of 40 to 45 hours of work, so that a full-time intern is expected to spend 40 to 45 hours a week. A term-time intern is, by the country’s own definition, working a fraction of that.
Which fraction is a question the research answers reasonably well. The Penn Wharton Budget Model’s review of college employment reports that students who worked every month while at a four-year university averaged 0.41 standard deviations lower GPAs than non-working peers, while citing earlier work finding a positive correlation for students working fewer than 20 hours a week. The data is American, but the shape is the point: below roughly 20 hours the trade-off is mild, and above it the student starts paying with their degree. An intern who quietly does that will eventually choose the degree, and you will lose the whole relationship rather than a few hours.

The failure mode is scope, not hours
Teams that run into trouble with student interns usually did not over-hire hours. They assigned a four-week piece of work with no checkpoint inside it, and the exam block landed in week three. The work was 70% done, undocumented, in a branch nobody else understood, and by the time the intern resurfaced the surrounding code had moved. Nothing about that outcome is Indian, or student-specific — it is what a nine-day interruption does to any unsliced commitment.
The fix is structural and cheap. Work that fits inside one week survives an interrupted calendar, because every gap opens on finished ground. The capacity-planning checklist
- Ask for the calendar link at offer stage. One line: “send me your institute’s academic calendar and mark your exam weeks.” It takes the student two minutes and removes every scheduling surprise for the next year.
- Put the blackout dates in your own planning tool, not in an email you will never find again. Treat them exactly like a teammate’s booked leave.
- Agree an hour band, not a schedule. “10–15 hours a week, confirmed each Monday” survives contact with a timetable. “20 hours” agreed once does not.
- Slice work to one week. If a task cannot be finished or handed over inside seven days, it is scoped wrong for a part-time intern regardless of the calendar.
- Require a written handoff before each blackout. Done, half-done, where it lives, what you would do next. Ten minutes of writing protects three weeks of work.
- Plan the vacations deliberately. The published calendars hand you a four-week winter break and a summer running May to mid-July. That is when an intern who is already onboarded can take on something substantial — with no onboarding cost, because you paid it in September.
- Re-baseline every semester. New timetable, new hour band, new dates. Ask in the first week of term, not the week you need something shipped.
- Never let hours be a loyalty test. A student who tells you they have exams is doing the job. A student who silently drops from 15 hours to 30 is the one who will disappear in November.
