Stipend

Why it's worth your time

IIT Bombay's Industrial Research & Consultancy Centre runs a formal Research Internship Award: you work full-time inside an IIT Bombay research group for four to six months, with a guaranteed ₹15,000 monthly stipend — one of the few Indian research internships where the stipend is stated up front rather than left subject to project funds.

It is the strongest structured option for a semester in research: a named IIT Bombay lab, a faculty supervisor, and dated, verifiable work — the exact shape of proof that both graduate-school applications and engineering interviews reward. The selection calendar is published in full, which is worth knowing before you apply: shortlisted candidates are announced on 13 October 2026, interviews run 26 October to 5 November, results are declared by 10 December, and joining is between 21 December 2026 and 20 January 2027. That is nearly three months between applying and knowing, so do not hold other plans for it.

Be clear-eyed about the constraints before applying: it is on-campus in Mumbai and full-time (so it needs a free semester or a semester-long leave your institute permits), and eligibility is being among the top 20% of your discipline in the previous year at your own college, certified by your principal.

How to apply

1

Check you meet the bar: UG/PG student, top ~20% of your discipline, and able to be in Mumbai full-time for a semester.

2

Shortlist IIT Bombay research groups in your area and read their recent work — applications with a specific research interest read far stronger.

3

Prepare the two required documents: a 500-word Statement of Purpose (research interest, relevant background, career goals) and a certificate from your principal, in the prescribed format, confirming you are in the top 20% of your discipline.

4

Register on the IRCC internship portal and submit the final form before 5:30pm IST on 29 September 2026 (extended from 23 September) — drafts are not considered, and duplicate applications from different email addresses are rejected.

5

If selected, plan your joining between 21 December and 20 January with your home institute's approval.

Frequently asked questions

Is it still open?

Yes, briefly. IRCC extended the application deadline from 23 September to 5:30pm IST on 29 September 2026. The rest of the selection calendar (shortlist 13 October, interviews 26 October – 5 November, results by 10 December) is unchanged.

Is this remote?

No — it is full-time and on-campus at IIT Bombay, Mumbai. It suits a free semester or an institute-approved semester away.

Is the stipend confirmed?

Yes — ₹15,000 per month is stated in the program itself, unlike many research internships where pay depends on project funds.

I'm not from an IIT — can I apply?

Yes — the stated bar is being among the top 20% in the previous year in your discipline at your own college, university or institute, confirmed by a principal's certificate in the prescribed format. It is not limited to IIT students.

Is accommodation provided?

IRCC says campus accommodation on a sharing basis is subject to availability and applies to candidates from outside Mumbai — so it is possible, not guaranteed.

When will I know if I got in?

IRCC publishes the whole calendar: shortlisted candidate details on 13 October 2026, interviews between 26 October and 5 November, and results declared by 10 December 2026. Joining is then between 21 December 2026 and 20 January 2027, with the exact date agreed with the faculty in-charge of your project.
