Why it's worth your time
Apify runs a marketplace of over 62,000 ready-to-run tools it calls Actors — scrapers, crawlers and automation scripts. Anyone can build one, publish it to the Store, and set a price. When someone else runs your Actor, they pay for it, and you receive 80% of that revenue minus the platform usage costs the run consumed. Apify handles the billing, invoicing and payouts. Its own developer page states it pays out around $1.5 million a month to roughly 3,900 community developers.
This is on the page because of its shape, not its ceiling. Almost everything else here is a contest you can lose or a programme that can reject you: you apply, you wait, someone else decides. Here there is no application and no selection round — you publish, and either people run your tool or they don’t. For a student with no track record, that removes the single biggest obstacle to a first paid line, which is being picked. It also compounds: a tool that keeps working keeps earning while you are in class.
The honest caveats. Income is proportional to usage, so a tool nobody needs earns nothing — the skill being tested is picking a real, dull, recurring data problem rather than writing clever code. Payouts require identity verification (a legal name matching a government ID) to satisfy anti-money-laundering rules, invoices are generated on the 11th of each month, and there is a minimum payout of $20 for PayPal and Wise or $100 for other methods, with anything below that rolling into the next month. The older rental pricing model is being retired on 1 October 2026, so build on pay-per-event.
How to apply
Create a free Apify account — no credit card is required to sign up or publish.
Pick a boring, recurring data problem someone would actually pay for rather than the most technically interesting one. Usage is what pays.
Check the Store first: if fifty Actors already scrape the same site, pick something else or do it materially better.
Build the Actor, then set up monetisation on its Publication tab using pay-per-event — the rental model is retired on 1 October 2026.
Complete your billing details and identity verification before you expect a payout, not after. Individuals need a legal name matching a clear photo of a government ID.
Frequently asked questions
How much do you actually earn?
You receive 80% of the revenue your Actor generates, minus the platform usage costs those runs consumed; Apify keeps the rest. There is no fixed fee — income scales with how often people run your tool. Apify’s developer page states it pays out around $1.5 million a month across roughly 3,900 community developers.
Can students in India publish and get paid?
Yes — the platform is global and fully remote. Before any payout you must complete billing details and identity verification, which for an individual means a legal name matching a clear photo of an ID card or driving licence. Apify requires this to comply with anti-money-laundering rules.
Does it cost anything to start?
No. Signing up is free and no credit card is required. You publish an Actor to the Store and set its pricing yourself.
When do you get paid?
Payout invoices are generated automatically on the 11th of each month and auto-approve on the 14th if you take no action. The minimum payable amount is $20 for PayPal and Wise or $100 for other methods; anything below that rolls over to the following month.
Why is this on a list of paid opportunities rather than a side project?
Because nobody has to select you. Every other item here involves an application, a jury or a leaderboard — this one pays purely on whether the tool gets used, which is the highest-odds route on this page to being paid for code as a student with no track record. The trade-off is that a tool nobody needs earns nothing.
