Your 12-Person Startup Can Too.

India now hosts more than 1,700 Global Capability Centres employing close to 1.9 million professionals, and US companies drive roughly 70% of that demand. Every large American technology company has already run this experiment and concluded that Indian engineering talent is worth building an institution around. Seed-stage startups — the companies with the least budget and the most need — have mostly sat it out, because a twelve-person team cannot open an office in Bengaluru. It no longer needs to.

Key takeaways

Big Tech validated Indian engineering talent at institutional scale; startups can now access the same pool one verified student at a time.

The selection filter is extreme: about 180,000 candidates sat JEE Advanced in 2025 for roughly 18,160 IIT seats.

Track record is documented — over half of India’s first 100 unicorn founders came from an IIT, and IIT alumni have founded multiple US unicorns.

Second and third-year students are the underpriced segment: available, remote-native, and evaluated on code rather than credentials.

The filter that produces this talent pool

American founders tend to hear “IIT” without a sense of scale behind it. Here is the scale. In 2025, 180,422 candidates sat both papers of JEE Advanced and 54,378 qualified — and JEE Advanced is itself the second exam, open only to top performers in a preliminary round taken by well over a million students. Total B.Tech intake across the 23 IITs is about 18,160 seats, so only about a third of those who qualified secured a seat. The NITs and IIITs draw from the same national funnel one tier below. Whatever else you conclude, the students in these institutes have survived a quantitative selection process with a pass rate that makes elite US university admissions look generous.

The output side is documented too

Selection filters only matter if the graduates do something. They do: among the founders of India’s first 100 unicorns, over 50% graduated from an IIT — IIT Delhi alone accounts for 30 of them, IIT Bombay 18 and IIT Kanpur 16. The record extends to your own market: a Stanford study on non-US universities’ contribution to US innovation, reported by The Tribune, found nine US unicorn founders from IIT Kanpur alone and eight from IIT Delhi, putting these institutes on par with Oxford for US unicorn production. You are not being asked to take a chance on an unproven pipeline. You are being asked to reach it earlier than everyone else does.

Why second-year students specifically

Final-year students at these institutes are already spoken for by a campus placement system built for volume hiring. Second and third-year students are not — they are the segment with the most unstructured time, the strongest incentive to prove themselves, and no competing offers. They are also the segment the market has stopped serving well: a parliamentary panel flagged an unusual decline in placements across IITs and IIITs, with the same trend at NITs, while SignalFire’s State of Talent report shows new graduates falling to about 7% of Big Tech hires globally. Both sides of that squeeze work in your favour. Meanwhile the average US software engineering internship costs about $25.42 an hour — we ran the full comparison in US intern costs vs remote Indian talent — a number most seed-stage teams cannot win a bidding war at. Rates for remote students are set entirely by you — the point is that the conversation is even available.

How to run this without building an India operation

Scope one real ticket, not a job description. A well-defined issue from your actual backlog is the entire evaluation. Vague “internship projects” produce vague signal.

Screen on artefacts, not institutes. Open their merged pull requests and their deployed project. Twenty minutes of reading real code beats any credential comparison.

Verify the student is a student. Institute email verification and a linked GitHub account close the identity question that makes remote hiring feel risky.

Pay for the trial. A paid week costs less than one engineer-day of your time and changes the quality of what you get back. Our six-week work trial structure lays out the sequencing.

Define the overlap window in writing. Two to four hours of live overlap is enough; a 7–11pm IST block covers the US East Coast morning. See the IST↔US playbook.

Use a simple contractor agreement. Scope, hourly rate, IP assignment, monthly invoice, payment through a standard remittance service. This is routine, not exotic.

Treat it as a pipeline, not a cost line. A student you trained in second year is a known quantity when you are hiring seriously two years later — see converting remote interns to full-time.

Where Tierones fits

The obstacle for a US founder was never whether the talent exists — 1,700 capability centres settled that. It is that finding one verified second-year student, from an institute you cannot rank, whose GitHub is genuinely theirs, is a research project no eleven-person team has time for. Tierones is an invite-only network of verified students from IITs, NITs and IIITs, where Tier Rank converts commits, reviews and shipped projects into a signal you can act on without learning the Indian institute system. You post the ticket; we surface the students whose work already resembles it.

FAQ

Why should a seed-stage startup hire an Indian Tier-1 student rather than a US intern?

Often the real alternative is hiring nobody. US software engineering internships average around $25.42 an hour and seed-stage teams routinely lose those candidates to bigger names. India’s Tier-1 institutes select from hundreds of thousands of candidates for roughly eighteen thousand IIT seats, and those students are reachable for remote part-time work at rates each employer sets.

Is this just offshoring under a different name?

No. Offshoring hands a scoped module to a vendor team you do not manage. Hiring a verified student directly means one person joins your repository, your standups and your code review, evaluated by your engineers on what they ship. The relationship is with an individual contributor, not an agency.

How do we evaluate a student from an institute we have never heard of?

Evaluate the artefacts, not the institute. Merged pull requests you can open, a deployed application with real users, and the clarity of their PR descriptions tell you more in twenty minutes than any credential comparison. Then run a short paid work trial on a real ticket.

Hiring remote engineering help this quarter? Tell us what you need — we’ll show you the right 40, not the loudest 4,000.

US firms drive ~70% of demand for India’s 1,700+ capability centres.
