Here Is What Its Policy Says to Do First.

IIT Mandi’s Career and Placement Cell publishes a student internship policy that answers questions students usually ask in group chats: when you may go, who has to approve it, and what happens if you take an offer and walk away. The short version is that a B.Tech student there can take a 2-month internship after the 5th semester, needs the Faculty Advisor’s consent for the credit, and is barred from contacting recruiters directly during campus drives. This post reads that document so you do not have to. It is one institute’s rulebook, not a rule for every IIT, NIT or IIIT.

Key takeaways

B.Tech students may intern for 2 months or 6 months only after the 5th semester, and the cell issues a No-Objection Certificate only for the 2-month internship.

The policy sets two timelines for on-campus 2-month internships: winter (2nd week of December to 2nd week of January) and summer (1st week of June to end of July).

Credit for an off-campus internship runs through your Faculty Advisor, and the two mandatory credits are given at the advisor’s sole discretion.

Internships at start-ups that are not yet registered will not be considered, and the offer letter for a credited off-campus internship must reach the cell within 5 working days.

The calendar: what the policy actually permits

The duration section is blunt. A B.Tech student “can do an internship for 2 Months or 6 Months only after the 5th Semester”, and the cell provides an NOC “to B.Tech students only for 2-months internship after 5th semester”. M.Tech students may do 6 months according to their curriculum. The internship can be in India or outside it. For on-campus drives the stated windows are the winter and summer slots above; semester-long internships run from January (even semester) or June/July (odd semester), and the offer must arrive before the add-drop date.

Two consequences follow. A second-year student who finds a startup role cannot lean on this policy to start early; its duration rule says “only after the 5th Semester”, so the Faculty Advisor is the person to ask. And because the dates in the text refer to the December 2025 and June 2026 cycle, treat them as a pattern and confirm the current cycle with the cell. The PDF’s own file properties call it a proposed 2026-27 policy, which is another reason to check.

Approvals: the order matters

For a semester-long internship the policy requires approvals “in the following order”: Faculty Advisor, then the CnP Office, then the Academic Office. Off-campus, you inform the Faculty Advisor and must obtain permission within five working days: from the advisor and the AD Courses for a semester-long internship, and from the advisor alone for a semester-break one. Hostel leave and mess-off are your job, at least two weeks before a 6-month internship, and the cell says it is not liable for them.

Credit has a separate gate. The policy says the two credits for the mandatory internship are “only given at the sole discretion of the respective Faculty Advisor”, and that an off-campus internship must meet the Institute’s requirements, with its profile verified by the advisor. A table in the policy also lists a 14-week minimum, excluding the 6-week summer or winter break, and credits an online or remote internship at 6 credits against 9 for an onsite one. How that table applies to you is a question for your advisor, not a guess from a blog.

Rules that shape how you look for a role

One student, one internship. Once you hold an approved offer you cannot sit for further drives, and a student who refuses an on-campus offer is permanently barred from future drives.

No direct outreach during campus drives. Students are prohibited from contacting executives, HR or recruiters through any channel; communication goes through coordinators. The policy lists a ₹5,000 fine for unauthorized direct contact.

Resumes are checked. Every project, internship and position of responsibility must be backed by hard proof or a faculty validation link, and JEE or GATE ranks may not appear on a resume.

Contest-routed offers count as on-campus. An offer from a hackathon or online contest routed through the Placement Cell is treated as an on-campus offer.

Stipend changes are reportable. If a company alters the role or lowers the stipend by 20% or more from what was declared, the student should report it to the cell.

That resume rule is worth noticing. The institute’s own placement office already asks for proof behind every line, which is the habit a public profile with real commits and a code walkthrough builds. It also removes the one number, an exam rank, that tells a founder the least about how you write code.

A checklist before you accept an outside internship

Read the current policy PDF end to end and note the cycle dates it names.

Email your Faculty Advisor before you apply, describing the role, the company, the weekly hours and whether it is remote.

Confirm the company is a registered entity, since unregistered start-ups are excluded.

If you want credit, send the offer letter to the cell within 5 working days of receiving it.

Check the timing against your semester: for an off-campus internship during term, the policy makes you solely responsible for your ongoing course credits.

Keep the internship certificate in the format the Institute specifies; see our guide to writing the internship report.

If the role works US hours, read how to work US hours without losing your semester.

Where Tierones fits

Tierones matches students from IITs, NITs and IIITs with startups that hire on proof of work: real commits, shipped projects and a code walkthrough. We cannot approve a credit or issue an NOC; your institute does that. What we can do is make the proof you bring checkable. Build it on the students page.

FAQ

Can an IIT Mandi B.Tech student do a remote or off-campus internship for credit?

The Career and Placement Cell policy allows off-campus internships to count for credit, but only through the Faculty Advisor: the profile must be verified by them, the offer letter copied to the cell within 5 working days, and credits are awarded only after approval and completion. The policy says the two mandatory internship credits are given at the advisor’s sole discretion, so get consent before you apply.

Can I email founders directly while IIT Mandi’s internship season is running?

For the campus internship drive, no. The policy forbids contacting company executives, HR or recruiters through any channel and routes everything through student coordinators. Its rules cover the Career and Placement Cell’s own drives, so ask your Faculty Advisor how they apply to a self-sourced off-campus internship before you reach out.

Does a startup that is not yet registered count?

Under the policy’s duration rules, internships with start-up companies that are not yet registered will not be considered. A student pursuing a startup internship should confirm the company is a registered entity before applying.

Ready to put your work in front of startups? Create your profile with your .ac.in email and GitHub.

IIT Mandi allows 2- or 6-month internships only after the 5th semester, and credit needs your advisor.
