In the United States, the average intern at bachelor&#8217;s level was paid <a href=\"https:\/\/career.lafollette.wisc.edu\/blog\/2026\/04\/07\/2026-internship-co-op-benchmarks-from-naces-national-survey\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$23.35 an hour<\/a> in NACE&#8217;s most recent compensation data. Both of those are called a stipend, and neither number tells you anything on its own \u2014 because the unit, the hours and the currency are doing all the work. This is how to read a stipend offer properly before you accept it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key takeaways<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A monthly stipend hides the hours. American ones are quoted per hour. That difference is not cosmetic \u2014 it reflects what each market assumes about the work. A US summer internship is typically a full-time, fixed-length block, so an hourly rate describes it exactly. An Indian internship is frequently part-time and open-ended, so a flat monthly figure is easier to advertise and much harder to evaluate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do the division yourself. AICTE&#8217;s internship policy treats 40\u201345 hours a week as full-time, and expects term-time internships to be part-time \u2014 we worked through what that means for a real semester in <a href=\"https:\/\/tierones.io\/blog\/part-time-internship-alongside-coursework\/\">a separate post on part-time internships alongside coursework<\/a>. A \u20b920,000 monthly stipend for 40 hours a week is roughly \u20b9115 an hour. The same \u20b920,000 for 12 hours a week is closer to \u20b9385. The second offer is more than three times better and looks identical on a r\u00e9sum\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the Indian market actually pays<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most cited domestic dataset is Internshala&#8217;s Internship Trends Report, covering its own listings. In the 2024 edition, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.careers360.com\/internshala-internship-trends-report-2024-25-percent-rise-in-internship-opportunities-observed-in-2024\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the average stipend was \u20b98,000 a month, with the top offers reaching \u20b91 lakh<\/a>, opportunities up 25% year on year, and 22% of internships carrying a pre-placement offer. Engineering accounted for 20% of the listings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read that distribution carefully. An average of \u20b98,000 against a ceiling of \u20b91 lakh is not a bell curve; it is a long floor with a thin spike on top. The PM Internship Scheme&#8217;s \u20b99,000 floor is a useful reference point precisely because it is deliberately modest \u2014 an offer below the level the state treats as a minimum is worth noticing before you weigh anything else in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/tierones.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/stipend-per-hour-inline-opt-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"stipend-per-hour-inline\" class=\"wp-image-307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tierones.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/stipend-per-hour-inline-opt-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tierones.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/stipend-per-hour-inline-opt-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tierones.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/stipend-per-hour-inline-opt-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tierones.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/stipend-per-hour-inline-opt-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/tierones.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/stipend-per-hour-inline-opt.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the US number means \u2014 and what it does not<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NACE&#8217;s 2026 benchmarks put bachelor&#8217;s-level interns at $23.35 an hour, up from $23.04, with co-op students at $24.46; computer science sits among the higher-paying fields. The same analysis notes that once inflation is accounted for, <a href=\"https:\/\/career.lafollette.wisc.edu\/blog\/2026\/04\/07\/2026-internship-co-op-benchmarks-from-naces-national-survey\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">intern pay has fallen by more than 3% over the past decade<\/a> in real terms. So even in the market with the highest headline numbers, the trend is flat to slightly down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two honest caveats. That figure describes interns hired in the United States, where the employer is also paying US costs; it is not a rate card for a student working remotely from an Indian campus. And nobody sets these rates centrally \u2014 a stipend is whatever a particular employer decides a particular role is worth. Use the US number as evidence that hourly pricing is normal, and that asking what a role pays per hour is an ordinary question rather than a rude one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The offer is not what lands in your account<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are paid from abroad, the quoted figure passes through a transfer corridor before it reaches you, and the corridor takes a cut twice \u2014 once on the fee and once on the exchange rate. Checking Wise&#8217;s own USD-to-India page on 7 September 2026, a $350 transfer showed <a href=\"https:\/\/wise.com\/us\/send-money\/send-money-to-india\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a fee of $3.03 paid by direct debit against $8.54 by bank transfer<\/a> \u2014 under 1% versus roughly 2.4% for the identical transfer. Card-funded transfers and traditional bank wires cost more again, so the payment method you agree to in week one compounds across a six-month internship. Convert the stipend to an hourly figure yourself.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is it paid monthly on a fixed date, or on invoice? If on invoice, who approves it and how long after submission does it clear?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which currency, and who absorbs the transfer fee and the exchange spread?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is anything withheld at source, and will you receive a document saying so?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is the amount performance-linked or fixed? A &#8220;\u20b925,000 up to&#8221; figure is a ceiling advertised as a stipend.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What happens during exams \u2014 is the stipend prorated, paused, or unaffected?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What will you be able to show publicly afterwards: a shipped feature, a merged pull request, a deployed service, a letter?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Money is one of the things an internship pays you in<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other is the option it creates. In NACE&#8217;s 2026 Internship &amp; Co-op Survey of 284 organisations, <a href=\"https:\/\/career.lafollette.wisc.edu\/blog\/2026\/04\/08\/intern-conversion-rate-hits-highest-mark-in-five-years\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the intern conversion rate reached 63.1%, the highest in five years, and 88.3% of the offers made were accepted<\/a>. An internship that ends with someone able to vouch for specific work you did is worth a great deal more than a slightly larger stipend attached to work nobody remembers. Treat that floor as the bottom of the market and judge everything above it by the hours it demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why do US roles quote an hourly rate and Indian ones a monthly stipend?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because they assume different shapes of work. If a role pays nothing, insist it is short, scoped to something you will own publicly, and explicit about what you will be able to demonstrate at the end.
