The Real Ones Don’t Come From Programmes.

Search “work from home internship” and you will find thousands of listings. Then look at what employers actually run: in NACE’s 2025 Internship and Co-op Report, 61.3 percent of employers planned a hybrid intern experience and nearly 35 percent an exclusively in-person one, while 0.9 percent expected to host a programme that was exclusively virtual. That is the gap this post is about. Fully remote internships are the rarest kind of structured programme in existence — which means the real ones almost never arrive as a programme at all. They arrive as a small company with a problem, hiring one person to work on it part-time.

Key takeaways

Only 0.9% of surveyed employers ran an exclusively virtual internship programme; hybrid at 61.3% is the norm, and hybrid is not open to you from Guwahati or Trichy.

9.1% of Indian job postings mentioned remote work in October 2025, up from 7.6% a year earlier — rising, but still a minority of the market.

Remote roles at startups pull 42% more applications than in-office ones, so remote is harder to win, not easier.

The realistic route is direct, part-time work with a small company — sourced by you, not by a portal.

The supply is small, and at startups it is shrinking

Startups are where remote hiring genuinely lives, and even there the direction has turned. Ashby’s 2026 State of Startup Hiring, built on 11 million applications and 32,000 hires across more than 1,200 venture-backed companies, reports that the share of remote-eligible roles fell from roughly 77 percent in the first quarter of 2023 to 61 percent by the fourth quarter of 2025. Still a majority — this is not the return-to-office collapse the headlines describe — but a market that is tightening rather than opening.

Read the two datasets together and the opportunity comes into focus. Large employers with formal programmes have concluded that interns need to be in a room, which is why the virtual figure sits under one percent. Small companies without a programme concluded nothing of the sort, because they were already distributed. If you cannot physically be in a US or even a metro-Indian office, you are not competing for the 0.9 percent — you are competing for a job at a company small enough that nobody has written the internship policy yet.

India’s remote share is rising — just not in engineering first

The Indian market is moving in your favour, slowly. Indeed Hiring Lab’s October 2025 India update found that 9.1 percent of Indian job postings explicitly mentioned phrases such as “work from home” or “work remotely”, against 7.6 percent a year earlier, with the remote share rising in 84 percent of occupational categories. The leading category was IT infrastructure, operations and support at 18.2 percent — not software development, which the report does not break out.

That detail matters more than the headline. Remote work advertised loudly in India skews towards support, operations and back-office roles — which is also where the fee-charging “work from home internship” mills concentrate. The remote software work that would build your career is thinner on the ground and rarely sits on the portals students check first. A market where nine in a hundred postings mention remote at all is not one you can browse your way into.

Remote is more competitive, not less

The comforting story about remote work is that it removes geography as a barrier. It does — for everyone at once. The Ashby data quantifies what that does to a funnel: remote startup roles received 42 percent more inbound applications than in-office roles, with companies of 100 to 300 people seeing 426 applications per remote role against 281 per in-office one. A student applying cold to a listed remote role is entering the most crowded queue on the internet.

There is a compensating fact worth knowing, and it belongs to the employer’s side of the ledger: the same report finds remote technical roles closed at a 79 percent offer acceptance rate against 70 percent for in-office ones. Founders who hire remotely lose fewer candidates at the final step, which is precisely why the ones who have made it work keep doing it. Your job is to reach those founders before the queue does — which is a sourcing problem, not an application problem, and we covered the mechanics of it in how a student beats an 8.5 percent cold-email reply rate.

What a real remote internship looks like

A genuine remote engagement has four things: a named person who will review your work, a scoped problem with a definition of done, a written agreement covering hours and intellectual property, and a stipend the employer sets and actually pays. When the company is American, that pay is usually hourly and in US dollars — the rate is theirs to set, and the practical question is how it reaches your Indian bank account, which we walk through in the student’s guide to getting paid by a US startup.

The counterfeit version is easy to spot once you know the tells: a registration, training or certificate fee, a “certificate” as the headline deliverable, or pressure to post an offer letter publicly before you have written a line of code. No legitimate employer charges a student for the privilege of working — we wrote seven internship red flags as a standalone checklist. And since a term-time remote role is part-time by definition, plan the hours before you accept: AICTE’s own policy treats 40 to 45 hours a week as full-time.

The eight-step route to a real one

Stop searching for “internship”. The companies most likely to hire you remotely do not run internship programmes and do not use the word. Search for small companies with a problem you can work on.

Ship one thing strangers can use. A deployed link beats a repository of tutorials. Remote hiring is high-trust and low-information; the demo is the trust.

Write down how you built it. Remote teams judge you on writing before they ever hear you speak. A clear README and a short build note do more than a polished CV.

Pick twenty companies, not two hundred. Use products you actually use. The 426-applications queue is the one you are trying not to join.

Contribute before you ask. A fixed bug, a reproducible issue report or a small tool built on their API is a better opening line than any cover letter.

Name your overlap hours up front. Say which hours in IST you will be online against their time zone. It is the first practical objection a founder has, and answering it unprompted removes it.

Ask for a paid trial, not a title. Two weeks of scoped, paid work converts far more often than a request for “an internship opportunity”.

Get it in writing before you start. Hours, rate, payment method, who owns the code. Five minutes of clarity prevents the most common ending to these stories.

Where Tierones fits

Every step above is sourcing work you do alone, against a market where under one percent of formal programmes are remote and the listed remote roles are the most contested ones going. Tierones exists to compress that. Students at IITs, NITs and IIITs verify with an .ac.in email and connect the work they have actually shipped; US startups hiring remotely see the evidence rather than a claim. The roles are remote and part-time, and the employer sets the rate — we do not set, suggest or cap it. If you want to see what is open across the wider ecosystem this month, our opportunities page tracks real deadlines for paid remote programmes as they open.

FAQ

Are remote internships in India actually common?

Less common than the listings suggest. Across 247 organisations surveyed by NACE, 61.3 percent planned a hybrid intern experience and nearly 35 percent an exclusively in-person one, while just 0.9 percent expected an exclusively virtual programme. In India, Indeed Hiring Lab found 9.1 percent of postings mentioned remote work in October 2025, up from 7.6 percent a year earlier. Growing, but still a minority arrangement.

Is a remote internship easier to get than an on-site one?

No. Ashby’s analysis of 11 million applications across 1,200-plus startups found remote roles drew 42 percent more applications than in-office ones — 426 per role against 281 at companies of 100 to 300 people — while the share of remote-eligible roles fell from about 77 percent in early 2023 to 61 percent in late 2025. More applicants chasing fewer roles.

How do I tell a real remote internship from a fake one?

Follow the money and the work. A real role has a named reviewer, a scoped project, a written agreement and a stipend the employer sets and pays. A fake one charges a registration, training or certificate fee, sells a certificate instead of work, or pushes you to publicise an offer letter before you have done anything. No legitimate employer charges a student to work.

At an IIT, NIT or IIIT and after the version of this that is open year-round? Sign up free — verify with your .ac.in email, connect your GitHub, and let US startups hiring remotely judge what you have shipped.
