Here&#8217;s How You Start From Zero."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The advice to &#8220;get some experience first&#8221; has quietly stopped being actionable. Indeed&#8217;s Hiring Lab, analysing US tech postings that state an experience requirement, found that in the second quarter of 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringlab.org\/2025\/07\/30\/experience-requirements-have-tightened-amid-the-tech-hiring-freeze\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">only 18 percent were open to candidates with one year of experience or less, while the share demanding five years or more climbed from 37 percent to 42 percent since 2022<\/a>. If you are in second year with an empty resume, that gate is not going to open for you on schedule. So stop treating experience as something you qualify for and start treating it as something you manufacture \u2014 small, public, and in a specific order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key takeaways<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Experience requirements in tech tightened after early 2023 and have not loosened; waiting is not a strategy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A repository is no longer scarce \u2014 GitHub added 121 million of them in a single year. A used product still is.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>70% of employers now report skills-based hiring, and they ask for examples, not adjectives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sequence beats breadth: three throwaway builds, then one deep thing shipped to real users.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The gate is narrowing, not widening<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between the second quarters of 2022 and 2025 the middle band of postings \u2014 two to four years \u2014 shrank from 46 percent to 40 percent, and that share moved upward into the five-plus bracket rather than downward into the junior one. The same analysis found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringlab.org\/2025\/07\/30\/experience-requirements-have-tightened-amid-the-tech-hiring-freeze\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">postings with standard or junior titles down 34 percent against February 2020, against 19 percent for senior and manager roles<\/a>. Read that as a structural fact rather than a personal verdict: the bottom of the funnel narrowed for everyone at once, so what distinguishes you cannot be a line item thousands of other applicants also have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A repository is not scarce any more<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every roadmap tells second-years to &#8220;build projects and maintain your GitHub.&#8221; That advice was written for a world with fewer projects in it. GitHub&#8217;s 2025 Octoverse reports <a href=\"https:\/\/github.blog\/news-insights\/octoverse\/octoverse-a-new-developer-joins-github-every-second-as-ai-leads-typescript-to-1\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">121 million new repositories in a single year, roughly 230 every minute, and 36 million new developers joining \u2014 India alone adding 5.2 million, about 14 percent of all new accounts<\/a>. Whatever a repository signalled in 2019, it does not signal scarcity now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Building has also got cheaper. In Stack Overflow&#8217;s 2025 survey of 49,019 developers, of the 33,454 who had learned to code in the past year, <a href=\"https:\/\/survey.stackoverflow.co\/2025\/developers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">44 percent used AI code-generation tools to do it<\/a>. When the cost of producing a working CRUD app collapses, the app stops being the proof. What survives is everything downstream: did anyone use it, what broke, and can you defend your decisions out loud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What employers screen for when you have no history<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The screening criteria have moved in your favour, if you can supply evidence. NACE reports that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naceweb.org\/job-market\/trends-and-predictions\/employer-use-of-skills-based-hiring-practices-grows\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">70 percent of employers in its Job Outlook 2026 survey use skills-based hiring, up from 65 percent<\/a>, most often at interview (87 percent) and screening (65 percent). And when NACE asked what employers look for on a student resume, the top answer was not a job title: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naceweb.org\/talent-acquisition\/candidate-selection\/what-are-employers-looking-for-when-reviewing-college-students-resumes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nearly 90 percent cited problem-solving, around 80 percent teamwork, and at least 70 percent written communication, initiative and technical skills<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of those require an employer to have hired you first. The fix is sequence. Spend the first few weeks on three deliberately disposable builds \u2014 something with a database, something that talks to an external API, something with a front end a stranger could use. The purpose is not the output; it is to find out which of the three you kept opening at midnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then stop exploring and commit. One project, taken far enough that it is deployed, that someone outside your hostel has used it, and that it has broken at least once in a way you had to fix. Open source is a legitimate route but oversold as a starting point: what is realistically available to a first-timer is documentation and small patches \u2014 a lot of hours for modest signal. Ugly is fine. Unfinished is not.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Week 3:<\/strong> pick the one you would work on without being asked. Write down, in two sentences, who it is for.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Weeks 4\u20135:<\/strong> ship it to a URL. Not a repository \u2014 a link a stranger can open on a phone without installing anything.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Week 5:<\/strong> get ten real users who are not your friends. A campus group, a subreddit, a Discord for the problem you solved.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Week 6:<\/strong> fix what they broke, and note every bug with its cause. That file becomes your interview material.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Week 6:<\/strong> write one honest page: the constraint, the approach you chose, the one you rejected, what you would change.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Week 7:<\/strong> rehearse the two-minute walkthrough out loud. Any decision you cannot explain is your revision list.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Week 8:<\/strong> take it directly to people who hire, with the link in the first two lines. Ashby&#8217;s 2026 analysis of 11 million applications across more than 1,200 venture-backed startups found that a startup with fewer than 25 employees takes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashbyhq.com\/talent-trends-report\/reports\/startup-hiring\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">298 applications per hire and interviews about 15 people for each one<\/a>. Those are the numbers behind the silence in your inbox, and they are the whole argument for building something first: a link a founder can open in ten seconds skips the pile entirely, and it is the one thing you can produce this month without anyone&#8217;s permission. Only 18 percent of US tech postings stating an experience requirement were open to a year or less in the second quarter of 2025, and the five-plus band grew over the same period. What is realistically available to a first-time contributor is documentation and small patches \u2014 real hours for modest signal about judgment.
